On the first day of the Lunar New Year, I sat down with Yuan Wang for an inspiring conversation. Yuan is a product designer in the tech industry, using design to make a positive impact on people's lives and our environment. She's worked in music publishing and now focuses on controlled environmental agriculture.
Our conversation about Chengdu was both interesting and enlightening. It has a San Francisco vibe, and is of course the home of the beloved giant pandas! We discussed the local cuisine, how music was enjoyed despite my perceived restrictions, and the fireworks celebrations in Chengdu, Berlin, and parts of Nigeria. We also explored the digital spaces that have become so unhinged and how it contrasts with physical spaces.
Yuan then brought up the nostalgia of relationships with local stores and I was reminded of the pop and mum stores in Benin City, that I had forgotten about. I used to be so keen on shopping at supermarkets as a kid, but as Yuan pointed out "no credit tabs, with supermarkets."
Yuan had the courage to take a leap of faith and accept an exciting opportunity of a student exchange program on the other side of the world. It made me realize just how much our decision-making can change as we get older.
New Mexico was no Chengdu, but for Yuan, it was a place of new beginnings. After the initial struggle to adapt and find her path, Yuan reset and ended up in NYC. There, she changed from electrical engineering to pursue her true passion and has since expanded her horizons by working in different sectors of tech and embracing her creativity. Not only that, but Yuan is also passionate about giving back with her talent.
It was great speaking with Yuan and learning from her experiences. I hope to have her back again.
As a friendly reminder, there's a bonus conversation available only on Patreon (it's about podcasting and connects to the digital space convo)! So don't miss out on this inspiring chat with Yuan Wang.
